The Christian life is not just a belief system; it is a new way of living, empowered by the Holy Spirit. Having established the foundation of our faith—salvation by grace—we now turn to the practical blueprint for Christian conduct. What does Christian life mean? It means embracing a radical transformation, putting off the old self, and walking in the newness of life in Christ.

I. 💖 Love: The Foundation and Fulfillment of the Law

The entire blueprint for Christian living rests upon the central, profound command given by Jesus Christ. Our motivation is always divine love, which defines both our relationship with God and our actions toward people.

The Great Commands

Jesus defined the two greatest commandments:

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself."

Matthew 22:37-40

This profound love is the defining mark of the believer and the litmus test for our faith:

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another" (John 13:34)

"By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:35)

Practical Love in Community (Romans 12)

Love is made tangible through selfless devotion and humility toward others:

  • Be devoted to one another in love; honor one another above yourselves (Romans 12:10).

  • Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. 3 In humility value others above yourselves. 4 Look not only to your own interests but to the interests of others (Philippians 2:3-4).

  • Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn (Romans 12:15).

  • Continue to love each other as brothers and sisters (Hebrews 13:1).

II. Holiness: Transformation of Character and Conduct

Holiness is the call to transformation, characterized by putting off the old, corrupted self and putting on the new self, which is created to be like God in righteousness. This is the spiritual discipline for the Christian life concerning personal purity.

A. Putting Off the Old Self

We are commanded to actively discard the behaviors associated with our previous life (Works of the Flesh):

B. Putting On the New Self

Instead of the old self, we are to be clothed with the nature of Christ, which produces spiritual fruit:

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

1 Peter 1:15-16

Be holy in all you do, for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

III. 🗣️ Evangelism: Witness, Justice, and Stewardship

The Christian life is not solely an internal matter; it requires active engagement with the world as a witness for Christ, pursuing justice for the oppressed, and acting as faithful stewards of all we possess.

A. The Call to Witness

Our conduct should be a visible testimony that points others toward God:

  • Let your good deeds shine before others, that they may glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).

  • Live such good lives among the pagans that they may see your good deeds (1 Peter 2:12).

  • Always be prepared to give an answer for the hope that you have, but do this with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15).

  • Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage (2 Timothy 4:2).

B. Justice and Impartiality

We must reject favoritism and actively care for the vulnerable, which is a hallmark of pure religion:

  • Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith? But you have dishonored the poor (James 2:5-6).

  • Pure religion... is this: To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world (James 1:27).

  • If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? (1 John 3:17).

C. Stewardship and Contentment

We are called to faithful management of our resources, prioritizing God over wealth:

  • You cannot serve both God and money (Matthew 6:24).

  • Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:19-20).

  • Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

  • Command those who are rich... to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves (1 Timothy 6:17-19).

IV. ⛰️ Perseverance: Discipline, Community, and Eternal Reward

The Christian life requires ongoing commitment and the support of the community. We sustain the new life through consistent spiritual disciplines and mutual devotion, motivated by the certainty of a glorious, imperishable future.

A. The Disciplined Life

We are called to endurance and disciplined action:

  • Run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:1-2).

  • Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves (James 1:22).

  • Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

  • Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God (Philippians 4:6).

  • Be very careful how you live—not as unwise but as wise (Ephesians 5:15).

B. Motivation: The Imperishable Reward

The endurance required in Christian living is fueled by the assurance that our temporary hardships cannot compare to the promised eternal glory:

  • I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. (Romans 8:18)

  • Strive to labor into that rest (Hebrews 4:11, paraphrased).

  • Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life (John 6:27).

  • We have an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you (1 Peter 1:4).

C. Devotion to Community

The life of faith is lived best together, devoted to practices that build unity and strength:

  • They devoted themselves to: The apostles' teaching, and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer (Acts 2:42).

  • Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position (Romans 12:16).

  • If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone (Romans 12:18).

  • Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving as Christ forgave you (Ephesians 4:32).
